But George M. soon brought me down to earth and kept my head from getting too swollen. One of the teachers told him I had been boasting to some of the other kids from the school about how good I was. He gave about twenty of the senior students tickets to see one of the afternoon shows and when I danced with him at that performance he showed how good he was by adding twice as many taps as usual to the routine. He didn’t really show me up because there was nobody better than George M. but he whispered to me during the routine, “See kid, you aren’t quite there yet.” From that day on I stayed with my feet on the ground and never again boasted about my abilities.
